Wild Flower Hunts

A fun, on-going nature study we've been doing this summer is trying to identify all the wild flowers we see on our walks and hikes.  The kids love hunting for flowers for me to take a picture of.  It's kind of like a scavenger hunt.  Most of the flowers we've seen I can readily identify, but some have stumped me.  Especially the small ones that normally go unnoticed.
     Here are some we've seen.
Bluets

Some kind of sedum. Still working on I.D.ing this one.
Fleabane Daisy

Sweet Violet

Jack In The Pulpit

Flame Pink
Rhododendron

The great thing about doing this, is that the flowers that are in bloom are always changing, so you can still find new flowers even in areas you've been over several times.  It also encouages the kids to slow down and "smell the roses" so to speak.

  1. Susannah, what lovely finds! What book, online source, etc do you use to ultimately identify the flowers you find?

We just picked up The Ultimate Guide to Wild Flowers of North America for $4, but I'm not sure it'll be the best guide when we try to do something like you're doing. It does have nice pictures, though.

    Many blessings,
    Glory

  2. I like Audubon guides best, since they have actual photos and out door friendly covers.
